My first book of poetry Pocket Poems has been well-received and much enjoyed by a wide variety of readers. But this outcome was not inevitable. Had I not engaged Lydia Hall as my book designer, the result would have been much different. I needed her intuitive, intelligent sense of design, as well as her unmatched technical skill to produce a high-quality, professional result.
I also needed someone with imagination and a high aesthetic sense to help capture and contain my unique vision—someone adaptable, who could work with my loose, flowing style.
Lydia did just that. She was patient, empathetic, but kept a strong hold on the rudder in our quest for simplicity, coherence, and unity. I had moments of discouragement along the way and was free to express that. Then it was back to work with a fresh wind, buoyed by Lydia’s unwavering support.
Like myself, Lydia also insisted on high quality at every point of the project. As a result, the book speaks for itself and stands on a much labored-over foundation of lay-out and design.
I would recommend Lydia’s expertise as a book designer in a heartbeat. In fact, I am already taking my own advice, as Lydia and I embark on our next book project.
